Discussion:
This is weird: I go to install an audio utility and Visual FoxPro 9.0 installation takes over !!!

I installed an audio utility a few days ago that I use occasionally, a
freebie named MP3 Gain. I downloaded the most recent version and
installed it, evidently without problems. I just ran the shortcut and
instead of the utility opening I get screens indicating that an
installation of Visual FoxPro 9.0 is in progress and I'm asked to insert
a CD in my optical drive!

I do have Visual FoxPro 9.0 SP2 installed:

Visual FoxPro 09.00.0000.5815 for Windows [Oct 15 2007 09:11:06] Product
ID 76683-335-3466054-18620

I uninstalled MP3 Gain and installed it again in a new location, and at
the end of the installation I left the checkbox checked to launch the
newly installed program. What started was the same screens asking me to
insert a CD in my optical drive and proceed with the installation of
Visual FoxPro 9.0!!! What the devil is going on?

Hitting Cancel causes the same screen to appear saying the feature
cannot be installed without the Visual FoxPro CD. The only way I can
terminate this is in Task Manager. Of course, I cannot run MP3 Gain.
What's going on? Do I need to uninstall VFP 9.0?

The shortcut for the utility has this target:

G:\Apps\UtilXP\Sound\MP3Gain_1.2.5\MP3GainGUI.exe

I don't have Visual FoxPro 9.0 running. If it is running it doesn't
matter. Nothing I do has changed this very peculiar behavior. The
shortcut to the program's help .chm works. So does the shortcut to the
program's uninstall utility, which I've used a couple of times already
in an effort to resolve this.

I'm running XP Professional.

I uninstalled the utility again and this time installed the old version
from 2002. I get the same bewildering outcome. The only thing I can
think to do is uninstall VFP 9.0! I've never seen stuff like this.

Group there's a setting in your registry that probably didn't get cleared
out during an installation. Take a look in your registry and see if your
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/App Paths/setup.exe (default)
value pointing to your setup. You should be able to blank it out.

The value for that right now is:

Fast Ethernet NIC Driver\setup.exe

I don't see a connection with VFP. I'll modify it now and blank it. Is
that what's causing the problem? I'm wondering if it's a different key.

Thanks for the help.

Whatever may be there at that key should NOT remain there after it has done

I installed Registry Mechanic and it found hundreds of registry errors
but refused to fix without buying the program! So, I downloaded and
installed a freebie, ccleaner, and it found hundreds too, and fixed
them. Now that value is blank but the error still happens. In fact, when
I try to install other utilities the error occurs. In fact, when I try
to run registry mechanic it happens. If I ignore it long enough registry
mechanic manages to finally load. I searched the registery for
references to that string:

Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English

I didn't see anything that struck me as being at the root of the
problem. I suppose that an uninstallation of VFP 9.0 will solve the
problem, but I'm not even confident of that. This is strange, indeed.

Thanks. That looks like the likely culprit. However, it looks not easy
to implement the fix indicated. Would an uninstall and reinstall of VFP
9.0 also fix the problem?

Evidently something I installed uses one or more of the OCX controls
that VFP 9.0 uses. How can I find out what OCX controls VFP is using.
That would seem to be necessary in implementing Doug Hennig's fixes
here. Thanks again.

In my experience, that's never fixed the problem. It's always been
something screwed up in the registry and uninstalling/reinstalling never
seemed to fix it for me. When they had this occur at work, they'd always
flatten the machine and re-install Windows from a ghosted image.

Ah, LOL. Well, I fell out of the habit of using Ghost. I do believe I'm
going to go back to it imminently. Thanks ! I think I'll try some more
to fix it without reinstalling Windows, but am prepared to do that if
necessary, and it is pretty clear to me I can't live with this problem.
Given all the installation and configuration issues I've dealt with
since early March, a reinstallation of Windows, etc. etc. is no big
deal!

I found this page which gives me hope that an un/reinstall of VFP will
resolve the problems:

Found it searching on VS_SETUP.MSI which was mentioned in one of the

Well, I go to Add/Remove Programs and choose VFP 9.0 and I get a very
similar looking error window when I elect to Repair the installation
(figure it's worth a shot to do that before resorting to un/reinstall).
Since it says it can't find the location of the installation in the
optical drive, I insert the install disk and it continues and says the
installation went OK, but the error persisted when I tried running MP3
Gain. I figure maybe if I do this again with the VFP install CD in the
drive to begin with it will work better and I do this (what chance?),
and lo and behold, this time MP3 Gain actually opens! I said this was
weird. Well, I suppose the registry problem was resolved, but only time
will tell I suppose.

weird. Well, I suppose the registry problem was resolved, but only time

Did you not find the wrong registry entry to remove it by yourself?

I also had applications, that caused to start a repair installation
of an already fully installed product. Mostly it's some office
application. It seldom helped to give windows the installation
CD it demanded, I think you're lucky.

I tried to find the faulty registry entry (entries?) but couldn't. Seems
to me it could have been masked by the encryption techniques used in the
registry.

I was prepared, certainly, to uninstall VFP 9 and reinstall, although
even that may not have resolved the problem. I would have started from
scratch, probably, reformatting the OS partition, etc.
