Newsgroups Becoming a Thing of the Past?

First, I want to thank the contributors to this newsgroup. I've been
mostly a lurker, but I've benefited from their wisdom (I think we all
know who they are).

My ISP (Cox) announced they are terminating their Usenet service June
30th. I couldn't get a rational reason for this from their customer
support. Don't know if their coincidental timing with Microsoft is
intentional.

I haven't checked, but I suspect there may be other organizations
besides Microsoft terminating their newsgroup support.

Are newsgroups in general becoming a thing of the past?

I know the only newsgroup I visit on a regular basis is this one. For
99% of my other tech questions I go to a forum where there are
moderators and the layout is easier to navigate. Newsgroups once
served a valuable purpose and for some they still may, to me it's just
another sign of changing times.

Any one(s) in particular you like?

I found Msdn.en-US.visualfoxprogeneral to be pretty active. I also
downloaded & installed Microsoft Forums NNTP Bridge. The forum now
seems to fit in flawlessly with my other newsgroups and in my
preferred threaded format, using Forte Agent newsreader (in XP).

The one inconvenience is the bridge needs to be started before I can
access the server (127.0.0.1) for any new messages (I guess I could do
that automatically on bootup) and I need to log in to the server with
my Microsoft ID - altogether about a 3 click process with the
"remember id & password" option.
